FAQ
Aquasana FAQs
1. Do I need a plumber to install the system?
Depending on your skills and experience, we recommend hiring a professional to install your reverse osmosis system. Installation does require drilling into your pipes, which is not recommended for individuals unfamiliar with plumbing and permanent appliance installation. Please read through the owner's manual carefully before attempting to install the system. If you have any questions or need assistance, our technical support representatives at 866-662-6885 can guide you through the installation process. Or, follow along with our installation video.
Drilling into your water pipes is required to install the Aquasana SmartFlow® Reverse Osmosis water filter. For an easy installation that requires zero drilling, we recommend our Claryum® Direct Connect filter. This DIY install filter connects directly to your cold water line. So, no drilling or altering your plumbing is required. Aquasana also has a countertop option that offers the same professional grade filtration as our under sink options, the Clean Water Machine.
The faucet included with the Aquasana SmartFlow® Reverse Osmosis is expertly designed to work with our reverse osmosis system. If you choose to use another reverse osmosis air gap faucet, please consult the Owner's Manual, and we recommend you seek the help of a plumber to ensure proper installation. In order to maintain the NSF/ANSI 58 certification of this product, the drain line installation must comply with the standard requirements of a vertical air gap of two pipe diameters or 25 mm (1 in), whichever is larger, or an air gap faucet that is tested and certified against NSF/ANSI 58 must be included.
When RO membranes are manufactured, there is a preservative used to protect the membrane fibers from damage. This preservative needs to be flushed out after the system is installed and prior to drinking water from the RO system. In addition, the RO holding tank should be sanitized with 3mL of bleach during the installation. It is important to follow the flushing instructions in the Owner’s Manual to ensure all bleach from the water tank is flushed before consumption.
Turn off the cold water valve underneath the sink and depressurize the system by opening the faucet and releasing all the water. Ensure color-coded tubing is installed into the correct placement on the system. Tubing should be cut straight across, not at an angle. Check to ensure the tubing is fully inserted into the system manifold until tubing can no longer be pushed in. Once all tubing is installed and the system is reconnected, turn the water valve on and check for leaks. Check that the filter cartridges are in the locked position. They should be rotated fully clockwise until the handles are horizontal.

Ensure water is flowing from the dedicated faucet. If the water is flowing, close the faucet and check the water pressure in one hour. This will allow enough time for the tank to fill.

If you’re still experiencing slow water pressure and it has been over six months since changing the filter, we recommend changing your filter.

The best flow rate will be 0.75 GPM when the tank is completely full. The flow rate may slow as the water is depleted from the tank.

A visual way to ensure you are inserting the tubing all the way into the quick connect is to put a mark 5/8” up from the end of the tube; the tube should be inserted that far. After installing the system and flushing, leaks may not appear. Ensure your system is not leaking by checking post-installation periodically. Recheck an hour after the tank is filled with water, which takes about an hour.
You may hear quiet gurgling from the airgap faucet or the sound of water refilling the tank. During set up you may hear louder sputtering from air leaving system.
No, the guides to help with insertion can only fit in their correct cartridge slot.
The cartridge handle should be horizontal and handle labeling should be right side up.
Carbon fines can be present in your water when new filters are first installed and will go away after the flushing cycle.

Stage 1 (Carbon Block) and Stage 3 (Advanced Carbon Block) filter cartridges should be replaced every 6 months or up to 365 gallons. Stage 2 (SmartFlow® Membrane) should be replaced every 12 months depending on usage and water quality. For homes with higher water usage and/or poorer water quality, you may need to replace your SmartFlow® Membrane sooner than every 12 months. Stage 4 (Remineralizer) should be replaced every 6 months depending on usage and water quality.

Yes. The SmartFlow® Reverse Osmosis is WQA tested and certified to reduce 90% of fluoride from your drinking water.
Yes. The Aquasana SmartFlow® Reverse Osmosis system is WQA tested and certified to reduce 96% of pentavalent arsenic from your drinking water. It will not convert trivalent arsenic to pentavalent arsenic.
The total volume of the holding tank is 3.2 gallons. Volume is based on your inlet water pressure. So, the gallons in the tank can vary from 1.4-3.2 gallons at any given time.
The SmartFlow® Reverse Osmosis Under Sink Water Filter flows at a rate of 0.8 gpm (gallons per minute).

Reverse osmosis is an incredibly effective method of filtering water, and it works by pushing water through a semi-permeable membrane (a porous block) at a high pressure to remove contaminants. As this pressurized water passes through the membrane, contaminants are left behind and only clean water passes through.

Our reverse osmosis system uses this process, in conjunction with a series of other filters, to increase effectiveness and retain healthy minerals that are often lost during the RO process. Water first passes through our Carbon Block to remove chlorine, taste and odor. Then, the system uses reverse osmosis filtration by pushing water through a semi-permeable SmartFlow® membrane at a high pressure to remove dissolved solids smaller than 1 micron. Next, our Advanced Carbon Block filter uses ion exchange and sub-micron filtration to remove heavy metals, chemicals including herbicides and pesticides, and other contaminants. Finally, our RO system uses remineralization technology to restore healthy minerals like calcium while improving the pH balance and alkalinity of water for exceptional taste.

Yes. The Aquasana SmartFlow® Reverse Osmosis water filter uses reverse osmosis to effectively purify your drinking water. In addition to reverse osmosis, the system also uses selective filtration to reduce 90 total contaminants, plus it includes a remineralizer designed to put back healthy minerals that are removed in the reverse osmosis process.

TDS, or Total Dissolved Solids, is the amount of dissolved minerals and metals present in water. TDS meters tell you the concentration of dissolved minerals and metals, but they are not an accurate measurement for contamination. Aquasana products reduce and remove harmful TDS like lead but selectively retain or replace healthy dissolved solids like calcium. Read more about TDS here.

The SmartFlow® Reverse Osmosis comes standard with a 6-month Remineralizer designed to replace healthy minerals lost in the reverse osmosis process.

Using a reverse osmosis water filter is a great way to remove harmful contaminants like lead, mercury, asbestos, and other impurities that have a range of health concerns. However, it's important to note that the reverse osmosis process also tends to remove healthy minerals from your water as well, such as calcium. To ensure you get the maximum health benefits from your water, make sure to use a filter that has a remineralizer, which restores the healthy minerals lost during reverse osmosis.
When installing your new water filtration system, it's critical for the system to be able to drain wastewater effectively. Do not install the drain connector onto the same drainpipe as the garbage disposal as this can cause blockages to the drain line of the water filtration system and could lead to water coming out of the air gap (keyhole) of the faucet. If the drain line must be installed on the same line as the garbage disposal, do not use the drain connector included. Instead, a garbage disposal adaptor is recommended and can be purchased separately. There are many types of these adapters available. An example of this type of adapter can be found on Amazon by clicking here.
